Beauvoir claims that although women may complain about their situation, they do no want to separate themselves from it. Despite the reasons for female emotionalism, Beauvoir describes woman as a child and thus shows her desire to escape from her own sex. Forced to accept a situation with which he disagrees, a child resorts to crying and theatrical forms of protest. Often, this protest achieves nothing and only serves to demonstrate his powerlessness relative to the people who make the rules. Like other faults in the female character, Beauvoir emphasizes that the self-indulgence of women has its roots in their social situation, particularly their childhood. Whereas a little boy identifies with his penis and makes it a symbol of his autonomy, a little girl associates herself with a passive object, the doll. Just as a little girl dresses up the doll and admires its beauty, she too wants to be admired according to Beauvoir (278-9). To satisfy the male sex, women learn that they must give up their autonomy and turn thems elves into beautified objects. Thus, narcissism arises in females, because they have been taught to please others since childhood. By dominating his fellow men and conquering nature, the male feels that his body affirms his own transcendence (280). In contrast, the female thinks of herself as the Other who the male dominates. Her body does not represent strength, but acts as a living doll (279). Beauvoir asserts that women cannot produce work of great value until they give up their self-indulgence. Of the legion of women who toy with arts and letters, very few persevere, Beauvoir claims, and even those who pass this first obstacle will very often continue to be torn between their narcissism and an inferiority complex (706). She argues that instead of using art to reveal some truth about the world, women treat art as a means of self-expression. Their focus is not on the art itself, but rather on the recognition that it brings. Thus, female writers lack the single-mindedness to cont emplate the world in the same way that Fyodor Dostoyevsky or Leo Tolstoy do. Beauvoir even claims that the novels of female writers such as Virginia Woolf or Jane Austen are inferior compared to those of great male authors (709). Although Beauvoir disapproves of narcissism and its effect on womens work, she labors to point out that the situation of women causes their artistic inferiority. She argues that the inferiority of women in the past reflects their situation and not their essence. But, Beauvoirs quickness to dismiss female authors and her criticism of the superficiality in womens literature indicate the dislike of her own sex. She argues that once women are liberated that they will produce transcendent work. However, she also notes that their biological disadvantages are a significant source of their subjugation.Along with her confusion of the biological and social, Beauvoir takes on a strange perspective when writing The Second Sex. Beauvoir criticizes women assuming that she is separated from them. To some extent, this separation is necessary in writing a book about the history of female oppression and its consequences. If Beauvoir were guilty of the narcissism, irrationality, passivity that she finds in other women, then she would discredit her own work. However, the notion that she is a unique woman who has overcome social difficulties confirms her dislike of her sex. Commenting on female writers, Beauvoir writes women do not contest the human situation, because they have hardly begun to assume ittheir works for the most part lack metaphysical resonances and also angerthey do not ask it questions, they do not expose its contradictions (711). Although she does not do so explicitly, Beauvoir refers to the aims of The Second Sex in the quote. It is thus evident that Beauvoir sees herself as separated from typical women in terms of intellectual capacity and freedom. In raising her criticism of the female sex, Beauvoir does not refer to herself as bei ng affected by a womans alienation from her body or by male dominance. Perhaps, she leaves out any personal references to give The Second Sex a sense of objectivity and accuracy. However, Beauvoirs choice to separate herself from other women makes her criticism more malevolent and indicates her dislike of being a woman. Although Beauvoir dislikes qualities that are exhibited by all women, she criticizes certain women more harshly than others in The Second Sex. Beauvoir thoroughly disapproves of women who are capable of improving their situation, but chose a domestic life. Discussing the French Revolution, she asserts that upper-class women chose to protect their economic privileges instead of fight for equal rights (112,626). In her view, women could have approached equality if the more political females of the working class had power (110). Talking about the present, she refers to upper-class housewives as parasites and asserts that they demoralize women who aspire to be independe nt (699). According to Beauvoir, their comfortable status tempts the independent woman who faces the difficulty of making her own success. She claims that this temptation of foregoing independence for a domestic life prevents women from having any great achievements. Because Beauvoir believes that most males find an intelligent female to be unattractive, women are caught between expressing their ambition and their femininity. This indecision causes them to make half-hearted efforts at succeeding in a career, because they do not want to lose the possibility of becoming a housewife. Beauvoir writes that she [woman] goes forward not with her eyes fixed straight ahead on a goal, but her glance wandering around her in every direction; and her gait is also timid and uncertain (699). For this reason, Beauvoir believes that women will be satisfied with mediocre achievements rather than great ones. Unable to pursue their goals with confidence, most women will be content with attempting somet hing rather than excelling in it (701). Thus, Beauvoir believes that upper-class women inhibit more independent women in their struggle for transcendence. Because it is more difficult for women to dedicate themselves to a task, the achievements of great women pale in comparison to great men (702). Although Beauvoir denounces upper-class women for their negative influence on others, she accuses all women of having character flaws in The Second Sex. Her attitude toward different social classes affects some of her criticism, but does not alter her general dislike of feminine qualities. Beauvoir begins The Second Sex by discussing the biological differences between men and women. She notes that although women are physically weaker than men, this fact does not explain their social inferiority. Beauvoir dismisses biology as an abstract science and asserts that society determines the significance of physical ability (38). Beauvoir is correct to claim that the importance of physical stren gth depends on the laws and customs of a society. However, mental disadvantages can hinder women regardless of their social situation. Thus, Beauvoir is too quick to dismiss the biological effects on a womans character. Beauvoir establishes that women are alienated from their bodies in way that men are not (20). If the body is the instrument of our grasp on the world and a limiting factor for our projects, this alienation would hurt women psychologically and diminish their possibilities of attaining transcendence (38). It is understandable that Beauvoir would downplay biological consequences in explaining the problems of the female sex. If the deficiencies in the female character are natural, then they are also permanent. Writing The Second Sex, a book that hopes for the equality between men and women, would be an unproductive exercise. But, despite Beauvoirs aversion to biological arguments, she returns to them frequently throughout The Second Sex and they underlie many of her cri ticisms. Thus, although Beauvoir outlines the injustice that women face, she has doubts about whether a womans bad character has natural or social causes. This confusion causes her dislike of women and pushes her to separate herself from her sex.

The Survey On Denver Downs Farm - 1763 Words
The observations of the subjects in the following paper were conducted on Saturday, October 17th 2015 at Denver Downs Farm in Anderson, South Carolina. Denver Downs was hosting a fall event that included hayrides, sports, games, a corn maze, and many other activities. This event drew in many people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. There was also a Clemson University football game the following day, drawing in many more people to the area that weekend. The observations took place from three to six at night when it was approximately sixty-eight degrees Fahrenheit outside. This allowed ample time to make significant observations and a comfortable temperature where subjects would remain for long periods of time. This time frame wasâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Taking turns allows a smooth transition between transactions and one must demonstrate that they heard and understand what someone said by giving some form of verbal or nonverbal response. There were many parents who brought their children to the event. This is because it is important to spend time with your children, especially on weekends when they may have no other obligations. When a child would scream or cry for whatever reason, subjects would turn and look around for the source of the sound. When someone is in distress, especially a helpless child, one must see if they can be of assistance. Most people would look away after locating the child and not respond when they saw someone else was with them. This is because it is no longer their responsibility if someone else, such as the perceived parent, is handling the situation. Older children were helping younger children on the rope swing and pillow trampoline. Young children need to be shown and taught what to do in situations they are not familiar with. Older children must teach them in situations where adults cannot, possibly due to size or age constrictions. Small children would play in sand boxes or other sanctioned off areas while parents sat o n the outskirts watching them. It is the leading cause of death among women aged 35-54. In 1999 an estimated 175,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. That is one woman every three minutes. At the same time 43,000 will die, at the rate of one every two minutes. The incidence of men diagnosed with breast cancer is rare, however it does occur. Approximately 1,300 men a year are diagnosed, and 400 die annually due to the disease. A total of 75% of all breast cancers occur in women with no known risk factors. 80% of breast cancers occur in women aged 50 and up. Studies have also shown that women who began menstruation early, twelve years or less, and women who began menopause late, fifty-five years plus, also have a greater risk of breast cancer. There are three ways to attempt to detect prevention, however since there is no cure, one cannot determine what actions to take to prevent. The most common technique for early detection is by a regular doctors examination. The second technique at detecting breast cancer is by a breast self-examination (BSE), and lastly, by mammogram. BSE should begin when a woman is eighteen or older, so that the breast is fully developed. During the BSE women should begin to learn what is normal and what is not in their breasts. Mammography is the best method at detecting breast cancer. A woman should have a mammogram when she is 40 yrs. old, and then one every two years until she is 50 yrs. old. Coral reefs need particular conditions in order to survive. They generally grow near the shoreline which is a form of protection for the shore. Coral reefs only grow to depths approximately 45 meters because they need sunlight in order to survive. The amount of oxygen available is also important because coral have symbiotic relationship with some types of algae. The algae live in the coral and perform photosynthesis which makes food for the algae and the coral alike. The coral gives the algae protection and sunlight. For this reason coral reefs are built in shallow, clear water where lights can reach them. The amount of sedimentation mud be low because sediments can block the sunlight they need. There are three main kinds of coral reefs. Each of these is thought to be a stage in the development of the coral reef. (Birkeland, 1997). These include the fringing reefs, barrier reefs and atolls. Some scientists include a fourth type, the patch reef, as well. The most common type of ref is the fringing reef. Found very near to land they can often form a shallow area in the lagoon. When reefs are formed it is the fringing reef that is formed first. Another type of reef is the barrier reef. It can resemble the fringing reef but they do not form so close to shore and are usually much larger than the fringing reef. The fringing reef grows out and the distance from land becomes greater causing the fringing reef to become a barrier reef. The atoll is shaped like a horseshoe or can be a circle. It surround the lagoon although there is no land associated with the atoll. This is because when the land subsides, only the reef remains and it has the shape of the land it surrounded. Finally, there is the patch reef which usually are found within the lagoon and ore the outcrops of coral. An abundance of both plant and animal life are an integral part of coral reefs. It is the richest place of biodiversity. In fact, ââ¬Å"Guam hosts over 3. 500 species of plants and animals, including 200 different types of corals. â⬠(Teach Ocean Science, ret. June 14, 2013). In addition to theses kinds of plants and animals, there are also microorganisms that call the coral reef home. Coral reefs donââ¬â¢t only benefit animals and plants, but they also benefit humans. They are one of the oldest ecosystems on our planet and one of the most beautiful. One way they benefit humans is due to their beauty. Areas with coral reefs bring tourism. This tourism supports local communities, creating jobs for local inhabitants. Visitors come to dive, snorkel, fish and enjoy the coral. These jobs help support the infrastructure of the community and build a strong economy. The economic value of many of the reefs individually are in excess of hundreds of millions of dollars, some over $1 billion each year. More importantly, there are many plants and animals that help us in the creation of new medicines and perfecting ones we already have. Medicines that have been developed or are being developed from the coral reefs include treatments for heart disease, cancer, arthritis, viruses just to name a few. More obvious than the previously mentioned benefits, coral reefs provide an abundance of fish and other sea life that helps populate the oceans for fishing. This also benefits humans. Fisheries are important for recreation as well as a trade to provide food. Also, as the name implies, coral reefs are a natural buffer between the ocean and the land. This helps prevent property damage, soil erosion, and protects people from storms. Nearby communities depend on the coral reefs for their well-being. Even though humans depend on the coral reef in so many ways, we are unfortunately slowly losing them. These natural beauties are disappearing at a faster and faster rate. The biggest threat is humans themselves. Healthy coral reefs need clean water but people are polluting these waters causing significant harm to the reefs. Fertilizers, soil, pesticides and even sewage is put into the water. These things make the water unhealthy for corals, smother the reef and make it more likely the will get diseases. Pollution is a major threat. Humans also often have destructive fishing practices. They use explosives to fish or bang on the reef with large sticks as well as bottom-trawling. In addition to these destructive practices, humans have been overfishing which upsets the natural balance of the ecosystem of the reef. The food chain is then so out of balance that the effects are not only the direct fish population but the entire ocean and beyond. Humans are not the only threats to coral reefs. Natural disasters can also harm the reefs. Hurricanes and other storms can cause damage as well. Global warming is also a threat. Corals will only survive in a certain water temperature and global warming has caused damage by elevating the levels of coral bleaching. When the reef is already unhealthy it is difficult for it to improve such a disaster. One way our own government has started to help protect the coral reef is by developing the U. S. Coral Reef Task Force. ââ¬Å"On June 11, 1998, President Clinton issued Executive Order 13089 on Coral Reef Protection. â⬠(EPA, Ret. June 10, 2013). This task force was charge with the duties of mapping and monitoring the US coral reefs, conducting research to identify major causes and consequences of the decline of the reefs and with developing ways to restore the damaged reefs and prevent further damage. Governments have set up Preservation Zones to focus on the cost of human impact to the coral reefs and how to maintain the reefs. Each of us can help protect the coral reef. Be sure to clean up after yourself when you go to the beach. It sounds simple, and it is but many people donââ¬â¢t follow this advice. If you go to the area, be sure not to touch the coral. Take care of it. Leave shells and other creatures where they are. The food chain is a delicate balance and we should not do anything, no matter how small it might seem, to upset that balance. If you fish, catch only what you will eat. Throw small fish back to reproduce and the largest because they lay the most eggs. And if you donââ¬â¢t fish, eat only the species of fish that are on the sustainable seafood list. Even if you are not in the area, you can reduce the amount of freshwater you use, develop habits that reduce the amount of greenhouse gases we produce like using too much electricity or driving a lot. Recycle more, including reusing items. Basically reducing our carbon footprint helps our coral reefs. Coral reefs are a vital resource in our environment. They are home to an extremely diverse population that is necessary to all life on earth. Humans have come to depend on this ecosystem for numerous things yet we still see the coral reefs disappearing quickly. But this sensitive ecosystem is depending on us was well. We each can do our part by minimizing our own carbon footprint but so much damage has already been done that this alone is not enough. Scope: The video that has been chosen is found to have safe spaces for the people as the individuals are found to have cultural awareness and with intelligence it has been shown by them at the situation required. The attitude exhibited by the boss at the working place in playing a joke on the colleague was taken in friendly way. Aim: The main aim of the scenario is to find out the culturally safe environment with respect to the video chosen and the safety spaces for the employees involved in it. Summary of the video clip The office is the film that has been taken where the employees nature has been described at the workplace. For making the job happening and entertaining there was prank played on one of the colleagues named Gareth. This was to make the office environment lively and to make employees enthusiastic and away from boring life. The sales representative named Tim has played a practical joke on Gareth his colleague (Flanja, 2009). While this was the situation David Brent the bosses arrives and get him involved in the joke and by understating the current status out there that Gareth was getting annoyed he plays safe in the work place. His nature and cultural intelligence at the current position shows his cultural awareness equality. This has been seen in the situation when the stapler was found in the jelly by David he makes fun out of it rather than making it a serious issue. This has been taped by Gervais and Merchant in the year 2001 and 2003 at United Kingdom. Summary of Literature The literature summary gives the idea of the concepts of cultural awareness, safe spaces and the cultural intelligence and the capabilities associated with it and how there concepts of ideas are associated with each other are being focused with respect to the situations. Safe spaces: In this scenario the discussion is about the safe spaces for school students. A space is said to be safe space if students can feel it very safe and secured truly. A safe space can be created by establishing the school concepts belongings and the participation of the communities (Holley Steiner, 2005). The belongings of school can be defined as the atmosphere that is created should be felt important by the student and the environment should be created in such a way that the student feels that they are the dynamic part of the community in the classroom. To the most extent the environment should be felt by the student that they can participate freely and completely in the classroom activities. In other words it can be said as if a student can express his individuals feelings in front of other students and instructor the that environment is considered to be a safe space. Cultural Intelligence: There are corresponding meanings which can be looked upon for describing the cultural intelligence. Slowly and carefully considering the action by alternative courses in various other cultures On another side the cultural intelligence can be referred to as the traits and the skills exhibited by the people for their quick adjustments with the less amount of stress, when there is an interaction widely with the other cultures other than the one they are socialized with. Cultural awareness: Communication is found to be the basis for the cultural awareness where it is found to be involving the abilities of standing behind from one self and knowing the cultural values and the beliefs along with the perceptions that are involved in it. Cultural awareness is the main part when there is an interaction session with the different people from various other cultures. Evaluation, interpretation and the way the things are looked at are seen in different ways by the people (Russell, 2011). When the individuals are having cultural awareness and shown cultural intelligence at the required place then it is said to be the safe spaces. Here it is said to be the safe space for the employees to work as the boss David has huge cultural awareness and with intelligence he knows how and when to display them according to the situations. When Tim was trying to put a practical joke on Gareth the boss David arrives to the workplace at the same time and takes part in that rather than getting annoyed with the Tims behaviour (Spencer-Oatey, 2012). He founds stapler in the jelly and asks for the explanation to Gareth for which he gets annoyed. But the boss understand the situation and handles it very aptly without exaggerating the situation much more and cools down the place with his intelligence. It has to be understood that every individual is not same and would not take the things at the right way. So instead of playing practical joke with one he might have involved group so that it would not have annoyed Gareth for this practice (Quappe Cantatore, 2005). The Tim body language was not felt comfortable by Gareth as he was trying to impose joke on him. But boss has created the environment later in such a way that it has settled down the things and made it a safe place to work. Here it explains that if we can get accustomed with the various cultures and known their cultural beliefs and values while having an interaction it would help us and creates a safe environment. Recommendations As the cultural intelligence has been displayed at the write situation it founds to be safe spaces for the employees to work at. Actually there was a situation of making practical joke on one person but it might be taken as cultural biased as it was annoying that particular employee rather if it was a group then there would be no chance of misunderstandings. It would have not led to any mistake of cultural behaviour that is not encouraged. But since only one person is involved it has bothered him by the behaviours of others which was not actually meant to do so. Later it was made clear by boss David by explaining it as a fun for making work environment healthy by his cultural intelligence. Conclusion This video clip was taken in the year 2001 at United Kingdom where the situation was to make the environment at the workplace away from boring conditions and it started with playing the practical joke on Gareth by putting stapler in jelly. So the conclusions that are made from this video are depicted here. It has been showing the cultural behaviour importance at work place and what kind of social behaviour has to be displayed with the colleagues with ethical values and beliefs are brightly understood. The story line was mostly revolving around three personalities such as Tim the sale person who was trying to prank the Gareth the employee and the Boss David who has got involved in the situation for creating the friendly environment. The search for a exceptional implant alloy is one which has laboratories researching and testing different types of alloys for the best combination of strength, durability, corrosion resistance, and other important traits these alloys must possess. The first implant metal to be discussed is stainless steel. The one most common stainless steel in use is 316L, grade 2. This particular alloy is mostly iron, chromium, and nickel, though it also contains nitrogen, magnesium, molybdenum, phosphorous, silicon, and sulfur. Most implant quality 316L has at least 62.5% iron, 17.6% chromium, and 14.5% nickel. The implant quality 316L has improved corrosion resistance, structure, and ductility over the commercial quality form of the alloy. An important property of the stainless steel alloy is its high chromium content which fights corrosion by forming an surface oxide. The nickel is added to insure no delta ferrite, or to combat the impact the chromium, molybdenum, and silicon have in forming ferrite. No delta ferrite is a condition where there is no metallic resonance, allowing for the implant to still be safe even when the patient is undergoing an MRI. OED Ex. My grandmother refuses to use anything so newfangled as a cell phone. The word newfangled, with the sense of addicted to novelty/ready to grasp at new things, is first recorded about 1470. The sense lately come into fashion occurs in 1533. The Old English verb fon (to capture, seize, take) had the past participle form gefangen. Not only does this old verb give us the fangle in newfangled, it gives us the word fang. with the sense of sharp tooth. Makes sense: something with fangs can seize with them. The appraiser and reviewer for any particular employee are identified based on the projects the employee worked during the appraisal cycle. A normal appraisal process flow would look like the below diagram If the employee is not satisfied with CRR rating then the following actions can be taken. Data Capture in Performagic The employee is evaluated based on performance tasks, competency and behavioural tasks. The performance tasks are set based on the role and the project in which the employee is working. The manager has the flexibility to make necessary modifications according to his perception of the role and expectations from the employee. Competency and behavioural indicators are based on the official designation of the employee. The employee is given the option to rate any 10 options from the competency and any 5 from the behavioral tasks. There is also individual utilization measures set for each employee which has to be met by the employee to ensure a met expectations rating. The utilization measures set are broadly defined on the IBU level, but can be modified if the appraiser feels that its required. Based on the ratings give to the performance ratings and behavioural tasks the score for the employee will be calculated based on pre decided logic.
